When Trials Shape Us for Good
Share
Everyone wants life to be good all the time, smooth days, clear skies, and no problems.
But that desire is where so much of our pain begins. We long for something that isn’t possible.
“Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble.” Job 14:1
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven… a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4
Sunshine feels warm because we’ve stood in the storm. Victory feels sweet because we’ve tasted defeat.
The problem is not that life has problems. The problem is believing we shouldn’t have any. We’ve been sold the lie that a “good life” means a pain-free one. But problems aren’t proof that life is bad, they’re proof that life is real.
“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.” 1 Peter 4:12–13
Struggles shape us. They sharpen us. They reveal strength we didn’t know we had. Trials strip away the surface and build endurance, character, and hope.
“Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” Romans 5:3–4
The good is good because it stands against the bad. Laughter is richer when it comes after tears. Peace is deeper when it follows chaos. The mountaintop feels like triumph because of the climb.
So instead of asking for a life without problems, we should pray for strength, wisdom, and peace to walk through them.
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
Life is not just good when it’s easy. It’s beautiful because God works all things, even the pain, for His purpose.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
